Mt Quincan is an unique island of endangered Mabi Type 5b rainforest. In October 2002 the Atherton Tablelands rare Mabi Forest was added to the national list of critically endangered ecological environments. Mabi is the local aboriginal name for the rare Tree-Kangaroo.

Vegetation in the water filled volcanic crater itself is a rare type of wetland found only on the Atherton Tableland - it is also regarded as endangered. This grassland/sedgeland community provides habitat for different group of birds and animals to those found in the rainforest.

Mt Quincan Crater Retreat is registered with 'Land For Wildlife' and has been selected by the 'Tree Kangaroo and Mammal Group' as a case-study project.

Lumholtz's Tree-Kangaroo is classified Rare under Queensland's Nature Conservation (Wildlife).

The case study identified 5 adult females, their offspring and a smaller number of males. The progressive revegetation of the property will increase this population.

Thousands of rainforest tree species have been planted to enhance existing forest and to provide additional 'tucker' for the tree roos. Interpretive signage is provided for a walk through one such plantation.

The red-legged pademelon, rare green ringtail possum, have also been recorded on the property - along with with the echidna, platypus and a variety of other rainforest animals and birds.

A botanical survey recorded a large diversity of plants - 101 species in total including two rare species.
